Police have detained a man in connection with the tragic jet ski incident at Pigeon Point Heritage Park, Tobago, on Wednesday which claimed the life of a seven year-old girl from Barrackpore.
The suspect, a resident of Canaan Feeder Road, Tobago, was taken into custody on Thursday morning by officers of the Tobago Divisional Task Force, led by Corporal Guy. His arrest follows an intense search for the operator of the jet ski involved in Wednesday’s accident.
The victim, Angelica Jogie, had been enjoying a family outing in the sea when the jet ski entered a clearly marked safe bathing zone and struck her and her relatives.
She was rushed to the Scarborough General Hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries.
Authorities had initially reported that the operator fled the scene immediately after the impact, prompting public appeals for information and calls for the individual to surrender by Chief Secretary Farley Augustine.
In the immediate aftermath, Augustine confirmed that the restricted swimming area had been breached, raising serious concerns about safety enforcement at popular beaches. The jet ski involved was later seized as part of the investigation.
As the probe continues, officials say the closure of Buccoo Reef Park, including Pigeon Point, was necessary to facilitate a thorough examination of the scene and to assist investigators in reconstructing the events leading up to the fatal crash.
Angelica was on vacation with her family when the tragedy occurred.
