Woman shot dead in her Van in Port-of-Spain

By FRANCIS JOSEPH

A woman who was a “person of interest” to the police, was shot dead in her vehicle on Monday morning in East Port-of-Spain.

Homicide Bureau officers said Jamelia Lewis, 38, was ambushed and shot and died inside of a vehicle which she also used as her home.

Investigators said that around 7 a.m. on Monday, Lewis was in her black Isuzu D-Max vehicle parked off Achong Street which is near to the John John intersection.

Police were told that a gunman approached the vehicle and opened fire striking Lewis multiple times killing her on the spot.

People who were on their way to work noticed the woman’s body slumped behind the steering wheel and contacted police. Officers from the Besson Street Police Station and the Homicide Bureau arrived and later removed her body to the Forensic Science Centre for an autopsy.

So who would want to kill Lewis? Homicide officers told Sunshine Today that Lewis was well known for selling drugs, and while they have no established motive, they believe the narcotic trade led to her demise.

One officer said that Lewis had been in and out of prison. She previously lived at Foster Road, East Dry River, but lately, she had been sleeping in her van. She was found semi-nude.

He said “It would seem that she was taken by surprise this morning by her killer.” Police are checking for CCTV footage.

No arrests have been made.
