A welder was shot dead at Symond Valley Road, St Ann’s, on Thursday evening when three men dressed as police officers opened fire.
The victim, Jamal Williams, 35, lived at Symond Valley Road, St Ann’s.
According to reports, the shooting occurred shortly before 7 p.m. on Thursday.
Police officers responding to reports of loud explosions found Williams lying along the roadway next to a black Kia Cerato. He was shot several times and showed no signs of life.
According to reports, Williams had been liming along the roadway with another man when a grey Suzuki Grand Vitara, with heavily tinted windows, reportedly pulled along St Ann’s Road before reversing into Symond Valley Road.
The vehicle stopped a short distance away before two doors opened.
Three men reportedly emerged, dressed in dark clothing and wearing bulletproof vests bearing the word “Police”, along with police-style hats. The men were armed and opened fire in the direction of Williams and the other man.
The other man reportedly jumped into a nearby river and escaped.
The attackers then fled the area in the grey vehicle.
Crime scene officers recovered one 9 mm spent shell casing and two .45-calibre spent shell casings from the scene.
Williams’ body was later removed to the Forensic Science Centre pending a post-mortem examination. No motive has been established. Investigations are continuing.
