It was a terrible Lucky Strike for criminals inside the Maximum Security Prison, Arouca.
Around 8 a.m. on Thursday, acting on intelligence received, Prisons Officers attached to the Security Department at the Maximum Security Prison confiscated a package suspected of having been introduced into the prison via a drone.
The package contained 20 packs of cigarettes.
Investigations are ongoing, with the assistance of external law enforcement agencies, to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident and identify those responsible.
Acting Commissioner of Prisons, Elvin Scanterbury commended the dedication of the officers involved in the ongoing fight against contraband trafficking within the prison system. He also reiterated concerns regarding the continued use of technology, particularly drones, in attempts to introduce prohibited articles into prisons.
