“Kidnap” victim charged with Murder

……Arrested in police station while reporting he was abducted

By FRANCIS JOSEPH

A 23-year-old man who went to the Arouca Police Station to report that he was kidnapped, but escaped with the kidnappers’ gun, was arrested and days later charged with murder.

Nelijah Bain had gone to the police station to report he had been kidnapped in La Horquetta and taken into the bushes at Bertie Lane, Five Rivers, Arouca. But he reportedly escaped from his kidnappers with their gun and went to the police station on April 12.

But he never left the police station. He was detained on inquiries into a report of murder. He claimed he disarmed one of the kidnappers and ran away. He even took the police back to the scene where he had been reportedly detained.

Now he has been formally charged with the murder of businesswoman Tricia Marajh.

Marajh, 44, was gunned down outside her home at Riverside Road, Curepe, on April 8 when she went to check on a potential seller of a motor vehicle. A gunman emerged from the vehicle’s backseat and opened fire, striking her multiple times before fleeing.

Bain, a Sales Assistant, of Arima, was also charged with Possession of Firearm and Possession of Ammunition, when he appeared before Master Rehanna Hosein, in the North Criminal Court, on Thursday 23rd April to answer to the charges. The Sufficiency Hearing date has been set for October 12th, 2026.

Investigations were supervised by ASP (Ag.) Victor, W/Insp. Sylvester, Sgt. Ramoutar and Sgt. Radhaykissoon and PC Subiah, all of the Homicide Bureau of Investigations (HBI), Region Two.

Bain was charged by PC Ramdial, also of HBI Region Two, on Tuesday 21st April, 2026, following advice received from Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Roger Gaspard SC, on Wednesday 22nd April.
