A man described as a Home Invader, was shot and killed by Police on Monday.
Shakeem Gabriel, alias “Kunta”, was killed during a reported exchange of gunfire with police in Curepe after officers responded to a report of a home invasion in progress.
According to reports, officers assigned to the St. Joseph CID Operations Unit and the Home Invasion Team responded to Les Jardins Townhouses, Rapsey Street, shortly before 9:45 a.m.
Police reportedly detained one suspect at the scene, while a second fled the area.
Investigators said the fleeing man was later tracked to the abandoned Jumbo Gym building at the corner of McInroy Street and Joyeau Street.
Officers surrounded the building, and during an attempt to apprehend him, the man reportedly opened fire on police. Officers returned fire, striking him.
The injured man was taken to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex, Mount Hope, where he later died while undergoing treatment.
Police said Gabriel, lived at Farm Road, St. Joseph, also called Bangladesh. He was reportedly known to police for firearm-related offences.
A firearm was recovered at the scene, and inquiries into the home invasion and the fatal police-involved shooting are continuing.
