It was a case of good luck for the Trinidad And Tobago Coast Guard and bad luck for two Venezuelan drug traffickers.
A Coast Guard vessel was on the island’s south coast searching for missing Venezuelan woman, Nikol Landaeta.
On Friday night, a pirogue with three Venezuelans capsized off Icacos Beach. One of the persons swam to shore and informed residents about what had happened. But he did not stick around. He ran off.
Sometime later, the body of Julio Lopez was discovered on the beach. The Coast Guard was assigned to look for the woman’s body.
Around 7:27 pm on Sunday, whilst conducting searches for the overturned vessel on the South Coast of Trinidad, the Coast Guard patrol boat observed a pirogue proceeding from Venezuela to the South Coast of Trinidad. The patrol boat was able to intercept the pirogue and discovered 252 packets of a green, plant-like substance resembling marijuana onboard.
Once the pirogue was secured it was handed over to officers of the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service along with its contents and its two occupants.
The Police have begun their investigations and charges are expected soon.
