Extortion behind businesswoman’s murder

By FRANCIS JOSEPH

Police believe that extortion was the reason for the killing of Tricia Marajh, 44, the owner of T’s Tasty Treats. Marajh was shot at Riverside Road, Curepe on Wednesday afternoon, but died on arrival at the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex, Mt Hope.

According to the police, residents reported hearing about ten gunshots around 4.30 pm and alerted the St Joseph Police Station.

Police officers responded and found Marajh suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. She was taken to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex where she was pronounced dead on arrival.

Homicide Bureau officers believe the woman was lured outside her home. Investigators said Marajh, a landlady, was at her home at Mungia Trace, Riverside Road,  when a gold-coloured Tiida sedan pulled up outside.

She reportedly received a call from someone claiming to be selling a vehicle, who told her he was outside her home.

Marajh then went outside, where a gunman exited the car and shot her several times.

The gunman was seen by residents returning to the back seat of the car before it sped off. One of Marajh’s relatives heard the gunfire and on checking, found her bleeding. He took her to hospital, where she was declared dead shortly after.

From what police were told, it seemed threats were made to the woman to pay “tax money” which she reportedly refused to do.
