The Government must be reminded of one fundamental fact: this is Trinidad and Tobago, not PNM territory or UNC territory.
Crime does not recognize political boundaries, party colours or constituencies. If the Government neglects the communities where criminal activity is concentrated, the consequences will eventually reach every section of society.
What should concern every citizen is the possibility of criminal gangs becoming so entrenched in particular communities that they effectively control territory. We have seen in other countries, including Haiti, the devastating consequences when gangs become powerful enough to challenge the authority of the State.
Trinidad and Tobago must never allow that to happen.
The Government therefore has a responsibility to ensure that the so-called “hot areas” receive sustained attention, policing and social intervention. Protecting one community cannot mean leaving another community exposed.
Westmoorings, Federation Park, Woodbrook, Diego Martin and every other community must understand that they are not immune. Crime can spread when criminal organizations are allowed to establish networks, recruit young people and operate with confidence.
There have also been reports in the past concerning alleged links between offenders and communities outside the traditional “hot spots.” Such reports should be properly investigated rather than used for political rhetoric or assumptions about entire communities.
The message should be simple: the Government must protect every citizen, regardless of where they live or which political party they support.
This is not about PNM or UNC.
