It seems that the criminals on the outside are not giving up.
Every week, an attempt is being made to throw prohibited items over the walls of the prison compounds. The most sought after is the Port-of-Spain State Prison.
Hopefully that would stop when the City Prison is earmarked to be closed by the end of November.
That means the criminals on the outside, trying to get things for their friends on the inside, will have to relocate their nefarious activities. At the Maximum Security Prison in Arouca, these criminals use drones for their drop.
The latest incident occurred on Tuesday morning.
Around 6:45 a.m. on Tuesday, officers attached to the Port of Spain Prison confiscated a package suspected to have been thrown over the prison’s perimeter wall.
The package contained the following prohibited articles:
– Thirteen (13) packs of L&M cigarettes;
– Ten (10) packs of Du Maurier cigarettes;
– Twenty (20) loose L&M cigarettes; and
– Thirty-two (32) cigarette lighters.
Acting Commissioner of Prisons, Elvin Scanterbury, commended the prison officers involved for their continued dedication and commitment to maintaining the safety and security of the nation’s correctional facilities.
He highlighted that their vigilance and prompt intervention prevented the prohibited articles from entering the prison population and demonstrates the importance of sustained vigilance by Prison Officers in safeguarding custodial environments.
“The Trinidad and Tobago Prison Service remains committed to maintaining the security and integrity of its correctional facilities through sustained vigilance and measures aimed at preventing the introduction of prohibited articles into prisons.
“Members of the public are reminded that attempts to introduce prohibited articles into correctional facilities are unlawful and pose a significant threat to prison security and rehabilitative efforts.”
Investigations are ongoing with the assistance of the Police Service
Around 12:07 a.m. on Sunday, officers attached to the Emergency Response Unit at the Port of Spain Prison, intercepted a pair of garden boots containing prohibited items which had been thrown over the prison’s perimeter wall.
A total of six hundred (600) cigarettes was discovered concealed inside. No one was held in either incident.
