“Batman”, the superhero, turned villain, in Tobago on Tuesday night.
“Batman”, along with three others, attempted to steal an ATM vault, filled with cash at a shop at Shelbourne Street, Plymouth, Tobago.
According to police reports, three Estate Constables were on duty at the YMCA and Beach Sports Facility, Courland, when they were accosted by two masked men. It is alleged, the men instructed the guards to hand over the keys to a yellow Caterpillar backhoe and a white Mazda truck. A report was then made to the police.
The two suspects were joined by two other men. They all proceeded to Shelbourne Street, Plymouth, where they used the backhoe in an attempt to access an automated telling machine (ATM), by crashing into and attempting to pull out the vault. During the operation, “Batman” fell to the ground. However, their efforts to remove the vault proved futile, after the arm of the backhoe sustained damage.
This effort last ten minutes. By that time, occupants of the same building were alerted to robbery attempt. They raised an alarm and called the police. Realizing that they could not move the vault, men then fled the scene in the truck, which was later found abandoned at Adventure Trace. By the time the police reached the scene, the suspects were gone.
Officers of the Criminal Investigations Department and the Task Force, Area North, are investigating.
