Peter Seemungal was a friendly face on Maraval Road. Some say he was homeless, others say he was living somewhere.
But on Monday morning, at an empty lot on Roberts Street, Woodbrook, it would seem that Seemungal confronted thieves trying to break into the warehouse of Massy Supermarket, on French Street.
It did not end well for Seemungal. He was strangled by the intruders and his hands were bound. He died in the empty lot. Employees say he was the “night guard” ensuring no one tampered with the warehouse.
The intruders managed to get into the back of the warehouse and escape with some items. The discovery was made shortly after 2 am by security guards on patrol. They also found Seemungal on the ground. He was dead. They alerted the police and personnel from Massy Stores.
On arrival, police found Seemungal’s body. The District Medical Officer visited the scene and ordered the removal of the body to the Forensic Science centre for an autopsy. His killing took the murder toll to 223.
For those who considered Seemungal a homeless man, he was well-dressed and very early on mornings he was seen walking gingerly up Maraval Road. His stop was outside of Hereford Bar where he remained for most of the day. That was opposite to Trinidad and Tobago Television (TTT).
Employees at TTT knew him well and often gave him money and food. If you knew him well, he would give you the Play Whe mark for the day.
In a statement on Tuesday, TTT posted:
“A tragic discovery in Woodbrook has hit close to home for the TTT family.
Many of us who work here would have seen and interacted with Peter Seemungal, who would often be outside the compound as we walked in and out each day.
Seemungal, who was homeless and staying at an abandoned property nearby, was found dead yesterday during a police response to a reported break-in at the Massy Stores warehouse on French Street.
Police said his hands and feet were bound and they are investigating the circumstances surrounding his death.”
No one has been arrested as yet.
