Bandits target elderly woman, businesses in three robberies

By Joey Bartlett

An 84-year-old woman and her 22-year-old grandson were locked inside a washroom during a home invasion in Preysal, Couva, in which two bandits stole gold and silver jewellery. In two other incidents, a woman lost cash and jewellery in a robbery at a Port of Spain mall, while in Caroni, a nursing home manager was robbed of cash and personal items.

The Preysal home invasion occurred around 1.33 pm on October 7. The grandson told police he heard his grandmother screaming and rushed to her aid. When he reached her, he saw two men standing over her, one armed with a cutlass and threatening the elderly woman.

The cutlass-wielding intruder then ordered the woman’s grandson to take him to a bedroom. The young man complied and was instructed to put jewellery belonging to his mother into a bag.

Before fleeing the house with the stolen gold and silver jewellery, one of the intruders locked the elderly woman and her grandson inside the washroom. The value of the stolen items has not yet been determined.

In a separate incident, a woman reported the theft of $12,000 in cash and a gold bracelet valued at $3,100 from her booth at New City Mall, Port of Spain. She discovered the theft after finding the locks had been changed.

The victim told police she secured the booth on October 2 and returned on October 7, only to find the locks had been changed. She contacted her landlord, who later arrived and opened the booth.

On entering, she found the booth ransacked and a cash box containing money and her bracelet missing.

Meanwhile, a 55-year-old manager at It’s Blessed Nursing Home in Kelly Village, Caroni, was robbed of cash, personal documents and a cellphone during an armed robbery.

Reports say the woman was performing her duties at the Church Street facility around 7.10 pm on October 6 when two men approached her, one armed with a gun.

The gunman pointed the gun at her and demanded money before stealing her purse. She told police the purse had $2,600, a bank debit card, her IDs and a Samsung Galaxy A25 cellphone valued at $2,000.

The suspects escaped by jumping over a fence on the property before running along Church Street.

Police investigations into all three incidents are ongoing.
