A 28 year-old man was firstly tased and later fatally shot by police in Barataria on Sunday night.
The death of Andre Adams brings to 33 the number of persons killed by police so far in 2026. The incident occurred around 6.40 p.m. at Sealy Street, El Socorro.
Investigators said police officers were called to Adams’ home by relatives who described him as an outpatient of the St Ann’s Psychiatric Hospital.
When police officers arrived, they met Emergency Health Services personnel who had earlier been called to the scene but were reportedly unable to attend to Adams.
Adams had been confined inside a downstairs apartment at the house, which had been locked. Police said officers looked through a window and saw Adams waving two cutlasses and threatening to chop anyone who approached him.
The police officers called on Adams to drop the cutlasses. He refused. Police then decided to force open the front door and restrain him. But as officers entered the apartment, Adams reportedly charged towards them with the cutlasses.
One officer tased Adams, but he continued advancing towards the officers. Another officer, who was armed with an assault rifle, then fired two shots. Adams was struck in his left thigh and fell to the ground.
He was transported him to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex, Mt Hope. Adams died at 8.50 p.m.
So far 33 persons have been killed by police in 28 incidents. In 2024, 55 people were killed in 38 incidents, while 69 people were killed in 56 incidents in 2025.
