…….Wayne Griffith stopped to part a fight
Port-of-Spain City Corporation Alderman, Wayne Griffith, was beaten and kicked about the body on Monday when he stopped to part a fight on Dundonald Street, Port-of-Spain.
While he was being attacked, no adult went to his rescue. Griffith suffered injuries and was robbed of his cell phone valued at $7,000, his wallet and wrist watch. A report has since been made to the Police.
A 36-second video went viral on Wednesday showing a female student of Tranquillity Government Secondary School punching Griffith, grabbing his T-shirt, throwing him to the ground following which other students jumped in, punched and kicked him.
Griffith, who is the Chairman of the Port-of-Spain South Constituency, said the incident occurred around 2.30 p.m. on Monday while he was driving along Dundonald Street. “I saw a number of students preventing me from going forward.
The children were in the middle of the road. I had to stop. Upon stopping, I saw the children fighting. I recognized over a dozen children were holding one little boy holding and beating him. A young lady held him in a choke hold. The rest of the students were beating him.”
“I came out of my vehicle and I asked them to disperse. I tried to part the young lady. I pulled both of them aside. Immediately, this young lady cuffed me straight in my mouth. I tried to take evasive action. She was constantly pursuing me. I tripped and I fell. I was dealt further blows, kicked to my head. My body was battered. I was badly beaten.”
“Although they did not act like children, I was cognisant they were children and youths. They were not acting normal, as we would say in Trinidad. They threw me to the ground and they were kicking me in my head. They were kicking me all over my body.”
“I slowly regained consciousness and composure. I looked for my cell phone to contact the police.”
“I suffered severe damage, lacerations to both knees, both elbows and the palms of my hand. The left hamstring muscle was severely damaged. There are no broken bones. But I kept getting severe headaches. I had to seek private attention. I had to do a CT scan to determine if there is any damage.”
Up to Wednesday night, Griffith, 62, was resting at home.
