A police officer was shot dead on Tuesday night. And one of the three men who ambushed him later died at hospital after being shot.
This incident happened at Kelly Village, Caroni. The dead officer has been identified as Police Constable Douglas, who was assigned to the Four Roads Police Station, Diego Martin.
According to police reports, shortly after 8 p.m on Tuesday, PC Douglas was seated inside a white Nissan Tiida, registration PDD 6374, near Hydraulic Trace, Kelly Village, when he came under gunfire.
Further reports said PC Douglas who was off duty but armed with his firearm, fired at the three men. The shooting then stopped as the three men fled in a car after taking the officer’s weapon.
Residents responded to the shooting and found PC Douglas lying motionless in the driver’s seat of his car. They called the police.
Meanwhile, one of his killers sustained a gunshot injury during the exchange of gunfire. He was later taken by his accomplices to the Arima General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
The two accomplices fled after dropping off their injured colleague.
Police revealed that the two accomplices later abandoned their getaway vehicle in Maloney. Homicide Bureau officers and crime scene personnel visited the scene.
The body of PC Douglas was taken to the Forensic Science Centre for an autopsy on Wednesday.
Investigators are trying to determine whether the incident was an attempt to take the officer’s car, or whether it was a hit on the life of PC Douglas.
Investigations are continuing.
