The Private Sector Commission (PSC) is urging CARICOM and regional partners to take a strong and united position in support of Guyanaโs territorial integrity, following what it describes as a deliberate provocation by Venezuela over the Essequibo region.
In a statement today, the PSC condemned the use of imagery by a senior Venezuelan official depicting Essequibo as part of Venezuela during a recent regional engagement in Barbados, warning that the act was neither accidental nor harmless.
According to the Commission, the move is a calculated attempt to shape narratives and test international response, posing a threat to regional stability and the principles of peaceful dispute resolution.
The PSC reaffirmed that Essequibo is Guyanaโs, highlighting that the region is governed, inhabited, and developed by Guyanese, and safeguarded under international law.
It also criticised Venezuelaโs continued actions, including the establishment of a so-called โGuayana Esequibaโ state, describing them as illegal and in violation of international rulings and agreements, including matters currently before the International Court of Justice.
The body is also calling on Barbados, as a CARICOM member state, to stand firmly in defence of Guyana, while urging the wider international community to remain vigilant and unequivocal in upholding the rule of law.
The PSC warned that failure to respond decisively could encourage further escalation, while stressing that Guyanaโs economic stability and development rely heavily on the protection of its borders.
