You are going to die. Every person reading this will die one day. The clothes, the jewellery, the homes and cars, the collection of items will be disposed of by those left behind. The memories of being good or bad will remain for a few generations and thereafter most of your descendants would barely remember your name. Your pictures would be forgotten. It is the legacy of doing something that made humanity and the world a better place that would live on for generations.
It is extremely easy to ask people to be noble. To stand up for what is right, that feeling deep in one soul that says this is the right thing to do. A value system inbred in every human that is more powerful than any religious belief. But how do you get a hungry, or thirsty person to adhere to such values when he or she is asked to compromise those values to fulfil a need. The person who has a family in need of sustenance can easily compromise his or her’s morality for relief.
Asking a person in public life to reject opportunities for new cars, homes, foreign bank accounts, and popularity for the public good and morality is easier said than done. Politics, according to one Basdeo Panday, has a morality of its own. People who one day condemn and disparage a leader can become members of their inner circle by simply paying homage and pledging new loyalty to the leader.
Despite the personal satisfaction and necessity for going along the road of immorality, it is the self-sacrifice, love, moral behaviour, and commitment to a greater good that makes the difference in the lives of the many. The money in the large bank accounts, the multiple homes, the luxurious trinkets that one receives for immoral behaviour, prevents roads from being fixed. That money for the one prevents the many from gaining better health care, modern schools, sporting facilities and equipment, care for the elderly and professionally managed communities that leads to general safety and prosperity.
To take the nation’s wealth and share it among the few while the many suffers is one of humanity greatest sin. To cause one person to hate, disparage, or dehumanize another for personal gain is a sin against the very nature of the Creator.
In a world that has grown up with divisiveness, wars and religion that has led to millions of lives being lost, we survive because the good, the noble, the ones that give in to the nature of good that lives in every human, dared to sacrifice for the needs of the many.
We are better when we love, better when we give, better when we share, and better when we care. We must never allow our greed or need, to have us compromise the good that dwells in each of us.
