Another Tragedy at Sea – Worker Dies

 By Peter Green

Another tragedy at sea!

A crane collapsed on Wednesday afternoon offshore and a worker fell and later died, Sunshine Today was informed.

The identity of the worker has not been released until his family has been duly informed. But internal and external investigations have begun to determine how and why the crane collapsed.

This incident happened at Perenco’s offshore Samaan field, off Galeota. No word has come from Minister of Energy and Energy Industries, Dr Roodal Moonilal, or Perenco.

The incident occurred around 3 pm, when the crane structure collapsed onto the offshore platform and parts of a supply vessel nearby.

The operator was inside the crane cab when the structure fell more than 100 feet into the water.

The worker’s body lay on the boat until it was transferred by another boat to Point Galeota. Operations at the Samaan field were suspended following the incident.

Perenco operates the Samaan field as part of the Teak, Samaan and Poui block, an offshore oil-producing area in Trinidad.

In December 2024, offshore worker Pete Phillip went missing after a rig partially collapsed in the East Soldado Field in the Gulf of Paria. Phillip fell into the sea during the incident involving Well Services Limited’s Rig 110. Despite search and recovery efforts, he was never found.
