My first visit to God’s country was well more than twenty years ago
When I decided to get on a plane and go to Trinidad and Tobago
I expected a Caribbean style holiday tourism vibe scenario
But was surprised as I set foot in the bustling old airport of Piarco
There was a more business like atmosphere on arrival all around
Then on to The Kapok Hotel which was such value for my pound
The climate was tropical and the locals were friendly and shrewd
The Soca, Chutney and Parang pleased me and all the tasty food
The countryside was spectacular with verdant hills of tropical green
With some of the finest beaches and scenery I have ever seen
The twisting coastline winding its way up and down to Maracas bay
Had incredible sights and viewing stops to blow your senses away
The busy capital of Port of Spain is a hotbed of so many vendors
The dry sense of humour is sharp like the the red rum they send us
The Hyatt, Kapok, Hilton, Marriott are all very modern hotels to stay
Their service and friendliness is so welcoming I do have to say
Diego Martin, Cunupia, Chaguanas, St.Annes, Macoya and Tunapuna
I enjoyed as well as SanJuan, San Fernando, Couva, Arima and Arouca
I drank a lot more cold Carib, Stag and Rum than I shoulda oughta
But could then refresh myself with mauby or a fresh Coconut water
Football, cricket, athletics and other sports are played in earnest
With so many aspiring youngsters playing and giving of their best
But surely the big highlight of the Year is Carnival and playing mas
Chipping for an amazing three days then some rest at Maracas
The spectacular costumes are striking and the bands are vibrant
All joining in every man, woman, boy, girl and every uncle and aunt
It really captures the spirit of this fine amazing multicultural nation
The big trucks throbbing and the wild wining is a visual sensation
A short trip to the scenic island of Tobago is a joy for no matter who
Pigeon Point, Crown Point and the Nylon Pool by the reef at Buccoo
A very special holiday destination is the beautiful island of Tobago
Great climate, turtles, crab and dumplings and home of Crusoe
So if you are looking for a place that’s magical and special to go
Then do visit the twin island Republic of Trinidad and Tobago
