Prisoner Jumps to Freedom from Hospital Floor

A prisoner who was being held on a charge of larceny, escaped from the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex, Mount Hope, on Sunday night.

Darren Stewart, 20, of Beetham Gardens, was taken to the hospital after complaining of feeling unwell. While waiting for attention, he was in handcuffs.

While no one was paying attention to him around 7.42 pm, Stewart made a dash to the corridor on the first floor, jumped over the railing to the ground floor where he escaped.

An alert was made and the compound was locked down. However, despite searches, Stewart was not located.

Security officials said because of the large area, Stewart, also known as “Chippy”, could have hidden anywhere before jumping the fence and making his way out onto the roadway in the dark of night.

Stewart is described as approximately five feet six inches tall, with his hair styled in cornrows. He was reportedly wearing an orange sweater, dark jeans and slippers at the time of his escape.
