A prominent local businessman and his wife were detained by officers of the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) on Wednesday morning in connection with the grant of a lease for a property just before the 2025 General Elections.

Up to the publication, no charges have been laid as investigations continue.

The businessman and his wife were detained at his residence in Westmoorings. After the arrest of the businessman and his wife, police also executed a warrant at his business place in Trincity. The investigators were searching for certain documents in connection with the investigation into the sale of property to a company. During the search, the police seize several laptops.

The couple is being kept in Port-of-Spain.

According to a media release from the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS), “officers executed search warrants lawfully issued by the Supreme Court of Judicature at locations in Westmoorings and Trincity earlier today.

“During the execution of these warrants, two individuals were detained and are currently assisting investigators with inquiries. No charges have been laid at this time.

The TTPS emphasizes that the execution of a warrant is a standard investigative procedure and does not constitute a finding of wrongdoing. All actions taken by officers were conducted strictly within the parameters of the law, under judicial authority, and with full regard for the rights and reputational interests of all persons involved.

“The TTPS further notes that no conclusions should be drawn regarding the status of any individual until investigations are completed and any evidence is properly assessed in accordance with due process.

“As this matter remains active, no additional details can be disclosed at this stage. The TTPS remains committed to conducting all investigations with professionalism, fairness, and respect for the rule of law.”
