How much more evidence do we need before the authorities start taking food packaging seriously?
I believe the Minister of Health should immediately examine the practice of wrapping cheese directly in plastic. When consumers can detect an unusual taste or smell from packaging, that should be enough to demand answers. We should not simply accept that this is the way things are done.
Where suitable, food safe greaseproof or parchment type paper should be considered as an alternative for wrapping cheese. More importantly, the public should know that every material coming into direct contact with food has been properly assessed and meets the required food safety standards.
We have seen authorities take action over plastic bottles because of their improper disposal and the resulting problems with blocked drains and flooding. We have also had laws dealing with people throwing bottles and other objects from moving vehicles.
If government can legislate and enforce rules to protect our drains and environment, surely it can apply the same urgency to protecting what goes directly into our mouths.
This is not a trivial matter. FOOD SAFETY IS PUBLIC HEALTH.
The Minister should instruct the relevant authorities to investigate the materials being used to package cheese and other foods, test them where necessary, and publish clear standards for consumers and retailers.
We should not wait for people to become sick before asking questions.
