Nelson Island is our own “Ellis Island”

A name like “Jahaji Island” or “Jahaji Memorial Island” would therefore shift the emphasis from a colonial figure to the lived experience, sacrifice, survival, and contribution of the people who came through there.

At the same time, others argue the original name should remain for historical continuity, while the site itself could be officially designated or interpreted as an Indian Arrival and Heritage memorial site.

This is really a national discussion about how Trinidad and Tobago chooses to remember its history,  colonial administration, or the people who endured it and helped build the country.
