T&T Is In A Recession – Where Is The Urgency

The Opposition Leader was quite correct to raise the issue of recession in her opening remarks on the Budget. Yet, where is the sustained media spotlight on the state of our economy? The country deserves an honest and open discussion about the economic challenges facing Trinidad and Tobago.

Our economy is flat, our energy sector is struggling to provide the momentum we need, and businesses cannot survive on promises. If we fail to act, more businesses will close and more citizens will find themselves on the breadline.

One area capable of giving our economy a much-needed shot in the arm is the Creative Industries, particularly entertainment and Carnival. With Tobago Carnival and Trinidad Carnival approaching, we must stop treating these events merely as cultural celebrations and start recognising them as serious economic opportunities.

Carnival creates business for hotels, restaurants, taxi operators, vendors, designers, costume makers, musicians, entertainers and countless small entrepreneurs. Tobago Carnival also offers an opportunity to attract visitors and stimulate economic activity in Tobago.

Government must work with the private sector to maximise these opportunities, support local talent, encourage investment and ensure that the economic benefits reach ordinary citizens and small businesses.

We cannot tax our way out of economic stagnation while the productive sectors remain weak. We need action, investment and policies that put money into circulation and create sustainable employment.

The time for complacency is over. The Government, the private sector and all stakeholders must recognise the seriousness of the situation and act with urgency.

T&T needs an economic revival NOW, not tomorrow, not next year. Every day of inaction puts more businesses, jobs and families at risk.

Where is the urgency? Where is the plan? And how much longer must the people of Trinidad and Tobago wait?
