Panorama needs upgrading

By Gordon Laughlin

Panorama is culturally important, but economically it has become predictable and under leveraged. For almost 50 years we have largely repeated the same model,  panyard rehearsals, semis, finals, while the world has moved toward “festival economies” that create months of tourism, FX inflows, hotel occupancy, conferences, digital content and international partnerships.

The problem is not Panorama itself. The problem is that we built Carnival around a single peak weekend instead of a 90-day creative season.

Here are areas where Trinidad & Tobago could evolve Carnival from January to March into a full economic engine:

Music & Entertainment Tourism

  • International Soca music conference with producers, DJs, streaming platforms and record labels.
  • Caribbean music awards hosted in T&T every January.
  • “Road to Carnival” weekly waterfront concerts featuring local artistes plus regional/international acts.
  • Global steelpan collaborations with jazz, EDM, Afrobeats and Latin artists.

Steelpan Commercialization

Instead of only competing bands:

  • International Pan Expo at the Queen’s Park Savannah.
  • Steelpan manufacturing and export showcase.
  • Pan tech innovation using AI sound engineering and digital instruments.
  • Global universities invited for pan workshops and certifications.
  • “Pan tourism” packages where foreigners learn pan for 1 week.

Culinary & Rum Festival Season

January and February should be packed with:

  • Caribbean food festivals.
  • Rum, cocoa and chocolate expos.
  • Street food championships.
  • Culinary tours into places like San Fernando, Chaguanas and Tobago villages.

Hotels, restaurants, bars and farmers would benefit directly.

Fashion & Creative Industries

Carnival costumes are world class, yet we barely monetize the industry globally.
Create:

  • Caribbean Fashion Week before Carnival.
  • Costume design expos.
  • Makeup, body art and event production conventions.
  • International buyers’ marketplace for Caribbean fashion and crafts.

Sports & Wellness Tourism

January–March weather is ideal for:

  • Beach festivals in Tobago.
  • International road races and cycling tours.
  • Cricket legends festivals.
  • Wellness retreats and yoga tourism tied to Carnival recovery packages.

Conferences & Business Tourism

Bring people BEFORE Carnival:

  • Caribbean fintech summit.
  • Energy and creative economy conferences.
  • Diaspora investment forums.
  • AI and digital entertainment expos.

Business travelers spend heavily in hotels and foreign exchange.

Film & Content Creation

T&T should become the Netflix/Youtube/TikTok capital of Carnival content.

  • International Carnival film festival.
  • Influencer partnerships.
  • Global livestream rights.
  • Behind the scenes documentaries.
  • Content creator villages with sponsorships.

Countries now monetize attention as much as physical tourism.

Night Economy Expansion

Right now many visitors complain there are limited premium experiences outside fete nights.
Develop:

  • Night markets.
  • Safe entertainment districts.
  • Late night waterfront food courts.
  • Cultural villages.
  • Interactive museums for calypso, steelpan and Carnival history.

Tobago Integration

Carnival benefits remain too Trinidad-centric.
Tobago should host:

  • Luxury recovery tourism after Carnival.
  • Yacht festivals.
  • Eco tourism packages.
  • Jazz and pan fusion weekends.
  • Premium villa tourism.

This would spread FX across both islands.

The Biggest Missing Piece: Packaging

Other countries sell experiences. We mostly announce events.

Visitors should be able to buy:

  • 7-day Pan package.
  • Food & fete package.
  • Luxury Carnival package.
  • Student Carnival package.
  • Diaspora heritage package.
  • Pan learning package.

Hotels, airlines, tour operators and event promoters must work together.

If managed properly, Carnival could become a 3-month economic season generating foreign exchange, jobs, exports, digital content revenue and year round global branding instead of just “same old same old” Panorama finals every year.
