Thirty-seven nationals of Trinidad and Tobago were airlifted out of earthquake ravaged Venezuela on Sunday.
Among the nationals, was a contingent of members of the Trinidad and Tobago Table Tennis Association. The four-member team had gone to participate in the WTT Youth Contender Caracas 2026 when the earthquake struck on June 24.
The four members were athletes, Chloe Fraser, Josiah Joseph, team official. Ernest Fraser. and team coach, Gurshwin Joseph.
The Trinidad and Tobago Table Tennis Association expressed thanks for the assistance given in bringing the four member team back home safely. They were especially grateful to Minister of Sport and Youth Affairs, Phillip Watts, and Minister of Foreign and Caricom Affairs, Sean Sobers.
The return of the other 33 nationals was facilitated by the Trinidad and Tobago Embassy in Caracas, through the intervention of Minister Sobers. The Ministry of Foreign and Caricom Affairs thanked Hover Tours and the management and staff of Rutaca Airlines for their invaluable assistance in getting the TT nationals out of Caracas.
Trinidad and Tobago has pledged assistance to the Government of Venezuela. But no decision has yet been taken on what supplies and human assistance would be sent to Caracas.
About 1,500 persons have so far been confirmed dead in the two earthquakes which rocked Venezuela on June 24.
