Venezuelan Escapee recaptured in Arouca

By FRANCIS JOSEPH

One of the 14 escapees from the Immigration Detention Centre, Aripo, was recaptured on Tuesday evening in Arouca.

Police said Venezuelan Edinson Maltin Alcala Larosa, who was staying at Thomas Trace, Arouca, was recaptured without incident.

The arrest occurred during Operation Resolute Shield, which was conducted in the Eastern District of the North Central Division between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. on Tuesday.

Around 5:30 p.m, police officers acting on intelligence proceeded to Hilda Trace, Arouca, where they conducted covert surveillance on a galvanized structure along the roadway.

During the operation, officers observed a man approaching the location and, based on prior intelligence and positive identification, executed a tactical intervention that resulted in his arrest.

Larosa was one of the right detainees who escaped from the Immigration Detention Centre (IDC) on July 18. He was taken into police custody and remains detained as investigations continue.

Seven other Venezuelans remain at large yesterday after 14 detainees escaped from the Immigration Detention Centre in Arima on Saturday afternoon following an assault on detention officers.

According to police, the incident occurred at about 3.40 p.m. when a detention officer on sentry duty detected smoke coming from the Male Housing Unit and alerted a supervisor.

The two officers entered the housing unit to investigate but were confronted by a group of male detainees who assaulted and overpowered them before pushing open a gate and fleeing the facility.

Police said the detainees escaped along the western corridor, exited the compound and fled over the southern perimeter fence. An alarm was raised immediately and law enforcement officers responded.

Four of the escapees were recaptured within minutes, with two held while attempting to scale the perimeter fence and two apprehended in the vicinity of the fence outside the compound.

A fifth detainee was arrested at about 6.40 a.m. on Sunday by ASP Rampallard of the Air Support Unit and officers of the Northern North Task Force along the Eastern Main Road, Wallerfield. He was returned to the Immigration Detention Centre.

The seven other detainees still being sought are Luis Brito, Jose Brito, Roimer Duran, Edison Monroy, Felix Espanol, Evereth Ramirez, and Ernesto Jose Figuera Caicedo.
