It would seem that the thieves who stole two Monstrances from the St Mary’s RC Church, St James, on June 2, may have gone to confession and repent.
Why?
The two Monstrances they stole during an early morning break-in, were returned to the same church on Friday morning. Added to that was $100 bill and a note from the sorry thieves.
The Monstrances, valued at $15,000, were found in a black bag on the steps of the St James church by parishioners who arrived for the 6.15 a.m. mass on Friday. They immediate informed the parish priest, Fr Emmanuel Pierre, before the start of the mass.
Fr Pierre immediately contacted the police.
On June 2, Father Pierre went to the church around 5.15 am in preparation for the 6.15 am mass when he came face to face with a masked intruder, dressed in a white overall. He called out, “I caught you! I caught you!” but the intruder ran out the door and fled. He then entered a car near the St James Medical Complex which sped off.
Eyewitnesses said that they believed the intruders were from Bournes Road, St James.The theft occurred two days before Corpus Christ.
Parishioners told Sunshine Today they were happy for the return of the Monstrances. One woman said “It would seem that criminals do have a heart.”
