A man described as unstable, was shot dead by Police in San Juan on Monday evening.
The man who was armed with two knives attacked and seriously injured a police officer during a violent confrontation in San Juan.
The dead man was identified as Abraham Hackette, 36. The injured officer, PC David Noel, sustained severe wounds and was rushed for emergency medical treatment.
According to reports, officers were on mobile patrol shortly before 7 p.m. when they responded to information about a disturbance in the San Juan district. Upon arriving in the area, they reportedly observed a group of men pursuing an armed suspect along a roadway.
Police said the suspect was allegedly carrying two knives and ignored repeated commands to drop the weapons. During the encounter, the man rushed at an officer and inflicted serious injuries to his hands and arms before fleeing the scene.
Despite his injuries, officers immediately launched a search operation, with additional units from several divisions responding to assist. The suspect was later located in a bushy area along the banks of the San Juan River.
Investigators said officers again ordered the man to surrender, but he allegedly advanced toward them while still armed. The Police fired several shots.
Hackette was later found wounded and was taken from the area to receive medical attention. However, he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival at hospital.
A knife was reportedly recovered near the scene.
PC Noel remains under medical care. Reports indicate that he suffered extensive lacerations to his upper body, including injuries. One of his hands was placed in a temporary cast.
Hackette was an out-patient of the St. Ann’s Psychiatric Hospital.
Investigations are continuing.
