What a time to be alive. We are living at a time of beautiful music, fantastic movies and some of the most luxurious vacation packages. Yet in the background, there are many seeking to hold on to old reasons for divisiveness based on race, colour, religion, class and politics. The millions that died in world wars and atomic bombs are forgotten and humans are rushing again to neglect the lessons learned, by ignoring the laws and regulations that emerged from decades of war and suffering.
Reading and watching videos about thousands of children killed as men seek dominance over others is commonplace. Instead of trading with each other and sharing our knowledge, many are seeking economic dominance. Our women who struggled for centuries to arrive at today’s position where they are among the most intelligent minds on the planet, are subject to attempts to have them return to a place of subjugation.
In a world where many are trying with every bit of a dying energy to continue on the path of divisiveness, the love of the many, the ordinary people who believe in the brotherhood of mankind, their voices are singing out loudly, we prefer peace, love and harmony. Those voices that were once subject to restraint and political dominance are now liberated through social media. Those who bought the traditional media for control no longer have the monopoly that they invested in. The little boy and girl in Africa, the family in Norway, the indigenous group in Peru and the child in Toco Trinidad all have access to a digital world that is filled with a majority of very good people who simply want to live in peace and harmony with all the people on this beautiful earth.
It is against this background of a struggle for peace and harmony that the people of Trinidad & Tobago who go to the theatre to hear our beautiful music, who attend our churches, temples and mosques, and relax on our beaches are saying that they will not accept attempts to divide us into us and them. Crime is a national problem, and we will support our government’s attempt to fix that problem nationally with a spirit of togetherness and love.
There are solutions, structured police patrols, social programs that offer visible alternatives to crime in sports, agriculture and long-term employment. We must find the solutions together, one people, one nation under one flag.
