“A Tragic, Senseless Act of Violence”

By FRANCIS JOSEPH

“A tragic, senseless, act of violence”

That was how Deputy Commissioner of Police, Suzette Martin, described the triple murder at Upper St Francois Valley Road, Belmont, on Thursday morning.

Martin, along with ACP Richard Smith, Senior Supt Raymond Thom, and others descended on Rifle Hill, Belmont, following the report that Anthony Wilson, alias Monster, Akil Kafi, and his two year-old son, Akinni, were shot dead during an ambush.

Akinni’s mother, Antonia, was also shot and wounded and is a patient at the Port-of-Spain General Hospital.

According to police reports, the four were travelling in a Toyota Aqua car, PDX 5254, when around 8.35 am, the vehicle was blocked and gunmen emerged with high-powered weapons and started shooting.

Wilson and Kafi emerged from the Aqua and started running, but they were pursued and shot. They collapsed on the roadway and died. The gunmen re-entered their vehicle and sped away. Akinni and Antonia were rushed to hospital where the toddler died. He would have turned two in two weeks’ time.

At the scene DCP Martin, when questioned, could not say if this triple murder, was linked to the quadruple murder on the Lady Young Road, Morvant, on April 19. In that incident, J’Lyana Armstrong, aged 9, was one of the persons killed.

But DCP Martin did say that Thursday’s triple murder was gang-related. No arrests have yet been made. The murder toll stands at 132.

Akinni Kafi

Just ten months ago, Akinni’s brother, Zion Roberts, 14, was shot dead on Serraneau Road, one street away from Thursday’s killings.

Zion, a Form Two student of the Success Laventille Secondary School, was pronounced dead at the Port-of-Spain General Hospital shortly afterwards after he was shot on July 4, 2025.

A 24-year-old man, who was also injured during the incident, was hospitalized after being treated for a wound to the right hand.

The two were part of a group of people sitting outside the D&D Mini Mart on Serraneau Road when a silver car drove up and stopped, and three armed men emerged and began shooting.
